WEXFORD YOUTHS remain firmly in the middle of the Airtricity Division 1 table after they went down to a single goal defeat to Cork City at Turners Cross on Friday night last. Having lost out to Longford Town seven days earlier, Wexford Youths have hit a losing patch after a promising run, at a crucial stage of the campaign, seeing their chance of moving into a top four position come to a stuttering halt.
Dropping three valuable points in the process was not without playing some quality football, and it was only a 38th-minute strike that denied them taking something from this game.
At one stage in the second-half it looked as if the Youths could not only manage an equaliser, but had they achieved a breakthrough, they could have gone on and won the game, given the quality of their play.
And with some justification as they knocked the ball around with great authority, with only some desperate defending by the home side's back four and excellent goalkeeping from Mark McNulty keeping them at bay.
Wexford Youths, after some good early defending with Chris McCann and Anthony Wolfe prominent at the back, showed an attacking instinct as Shane Dempsey was leaving his mark in midfield.
A cross from Dempsey was met by Sheahan but the ball flew narrowly wide, while at the opposite end Holden kept out a Stephen O'Flynn effort from close range.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 38th minute when O'Flynn powered home a header from ten metres, leaving Holden with no chance such was the power he got behind the effort.
That was how it remained until the interval despite Wexford Youths' best efforts to get back on terms before the break.
The visitors were unlucky early in the secondhalf when Danny Furlong saw his effort blocked, but the home side went close on several occasions to extending their lead with only good defending from the visitors keeping their goal intact. Leading goalscorer Gary Sheahan had a couple of runs and shots on goal but met with no luck as McNulty offered a safe pair of hands on each occasion, while Danny Furlong also saw an effort go the wrong side of the right hand post.
Wexford since their five goals against Limerick have been finding scoring difficult, and this once again proved their undoing on this occasion, as
they were left to make the long journey home empty-handed.
