Women resume at home to Cork
SUNDAY NEXT will see Wexford Youth Women resume their season when they host Cork Women F.C. in Ferrycarrig Park with a 2 p.m. kick-off. The club is happy with their opening five games which saw them win one and draw two, with the defeats to the two teams currently leading the way in the league, Peamount United and Raheny United.
The Wexford side has shown themselves to be one of the surprise teams of the league and currently sit in fourth place, just a point behind Castlebar Celtic. They drew with the Mayo side in Ferrycarrig Park on the opening day of the season and could have taken all the points, but the visitors' 'keeper pulled off a great penalty save from Ciara O'brien with ten minutes to go.
The only real downside of the season came a week later when they were defeated heavily away to Peamount United, but it was a lesson learned by the players and management of what level they needed to get to.
A scoreless draw with Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght followed a week later in a game totally dominated by the Wexford side, but the home team defended well to hang on for a point. A top-class display followed a week later in Ferrycarrig Park when league leaders Raheny United were fortunate to leave with the three points when winning 3-2.
Wexford had a goal disallowed to take the lead with twelve minutes remaining so it was one of those matches where the result could have gone either way, and the North Dublin side got the rub of the green. The elusive first win came in Cork just before the Christmas break with goals from Kylie Murphy and Rianna Jarrett in a very impressive display that showed how well the team had moved on.
The team only took a short break over the Christmas period and got back training shortly after the festivities so will be well prepared. The team have also been boosted by the signing of Cherelle Khessel from LA Strikers in the U.S. league where she has played for the past year. She played in the Wexford league in her younger years with Benfica and has been capped at Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
She was nominated as Under-19 national player of the year in 2010 which was a great honour.
