Five-star Youths sink Mervue
MERVUE UNITED 2 WEXFORD YOUTHS 5
WEXFORD YOUTHS ended a losing run with one of their most impressive displays of the season as they came from a goal down to gain all three points at the expense of Mervue United in their Division 1 league clash at Terryland Park on Saturday evening last. It was a positive response from Wexford Youths who were seeking to return to winning ways after a dismal run that had seen them drop down the table. Now with two successive home games they will be hoping to lift themselves right back up the table.
Wexford Youths had worked hard to turn their form around.
This they managed to achieve despite falling into arrears to an early goal.
They were the dominant side throughout, played the more composed football, while up front they looked sharp, with both front men getting in on the scoring act.
The home side opened the scoring inside five minutes of the start when Kevin Crehan found the net, but it did not take Wexford Youths long to get back on level terms.
Having forced a free-kick it was Shane Dempsey who curled a superb kick over the wall into the top right hand corner of the net for a deserved equaliser.
Wexford Youths would have been satisfied with nothing less than a win from this game despite their indifferent record against the lowly sides.
Having got back level they went on to control midfield where Shane Dempsey was in dominant form. Such was their total dominance they went on to hit three goals before the break.
It was the sharpness of Danny Furlong in front of goal that saw him force the ball home to put his side in front. Following this breakthrough the side grew in confience and it was a fine strike from Ben Ryan that increased his sides lead on 35 minutes.
Showing a real competitive edge to their play, Wexford Youths were now threatening to score in most of their attacks, while approaching the break it was Gary Sheahan who showed a turn of speed to shoot home from inside the area, making it 4-1 at the break.
The home side applied some early second-half pressure getting their reward when Crehan managed to pull a goal back. Having weathered the storm, Wexford Youths struck back for their fifth goal, with Sheahan once again the scorer.
It was a welcome victory for Wexford Youths who can now look forward to Friday evening's home fixture with promotion chasing Monaghan United, while the following Friday they entertain Salthill Devon.
