First blood to Wexford

WEXFORD FINISHED off the group stages of the Gala All-Ireland Senior camogie championship with a welldeserved six-point win over table-toppers Kilkenny in Wexford Park on Saturday last. And they will have to do it all over again in Nowlan Park on Saturday week, August 14, after the sides were pitted together again in the draw on Monday evening.

AN INJURY-time goal from Gary Sheahan helped Wexford Youths to their unbeaten run and consolidate their position in the top six by taking a point away to Athlone Town in their Division 1 game played on Friday night last. Inspired by their thrilling 5-3 victory over Limerick the previous week, Wexford Youths played some attractive football, but missed out on a real opportunity to close the gap on the top five.

THE WEXFORD Minor ladies brought home the Model county's second All-Ireland title of the year when they beat Tipperary in Freshford on Saturday last. The Kilkenny club was also the venue when Wexford's Under-14 team lifted the corresponding 'B' title on June 13 last, with Tipperary providing the opposition on that day too.

THE MOST striking aspect of the Youths 5-3 win over second placed Limerick on Friday night was the entertainment level - it was wonderful. And wonderful for Noel O'Connor, the butcher boy from Limerick - rumour has it that anyone who mentioned the game in the shop on Saturday got his meat at half price. And wonderful too for Gary Sheahan to score at the death after suffering endless abuse from the visiting supporters as he showed all night what they were missing.
