SIX WEXFORD boxers were celebrating recently after winning titles at the Leinster Boy 4, Youth 1 and 2 championships. In the Boy 4 semi-final, Gorey's David Kennedy beat Brendan Cummins from Dealgan 5-2, while Ryan Walsh of St. Ibar's was beaten 3-2 at the semi-final stage by Jason O'Reilly of Marble City.

In Sunday's Boy 4 finals, Jack Robinson of Wexford C.B.S. was a convincing 6-1 winner over Wayne Geraghty of St. Brigid's, Gary Turner of Sacre Coeur overcame Hugh Myers (Brosna) 8-1, and Killian Doyle (Sacre Coeur) narrowly lost out to Thady Joyce of Brosna 5-4.

In the Youth 1 final, there was success for Dean Walsh of St. Ibar's who stopped Luke Hennessy (South Meath) in the thrid round.

In the Youth 2 finals, Gavin Collier of St. Aidan's beat fellow Wexford boxer Gary West of Sacre Coeur 11-1, Dean Kennedy of St. Michael's (New Ross) beat James Mullholland (Callan) 9-5, and Jack Morrissey of Sacre Coeur overpowered Edenderry's Stephen Quinn 121.

There was no luck for Dylan Murray of Gorey who lost 6-4 to Noel Kehoe of Marble City.

All of the above winners now go forward to compete in the All-Ireland finals.

Meanwhile, five Wexford boxers were in action in the National Senior and Novice championships at the weekend, including Adam Nolan (see right).

Gorey heavyweight Niall Kennedy beat Paddy Gallagher of St. Saviour's 10-3 in the preliminary round before bowing out 12-2 to Jimmy Sweeney of Drimnagh in the quarter-final.

At light welterweight, Niall Murray from Gorey was an unlucky loser in the fight of the championship so far, losing 1714 to Philip Sutcliffe from Crumlin after a mammoth contest.

At light heavyweight, Richard Beale from St. Michael's was stopped by Tommy McCarthy of Oliver Plunketts, while Stephen Reville of St. Ibar's was beaten by David Stephenson.

Elsewhere, bantamweight Derek Thorpe, who received a bye into the final, now faces the unenviable task of going into battle with twice Senior champion and World bronze medalist, John Joe Nevin.

The fighter from Ferns will be the rank outsider but will go into battle with nothing to lose.
