Rain fails to dampen the spirits

Wednesday August 25 2010

THE RAIN tried to dampen things but a good crowd enjoyed some good racing featuring the remaining heats of the Reggie and Phil Turner Memorial Leger, races three to eight.

Race three (heat seven) got things off to a brisk start when the Nick Turner-trained 'Coco Dash' produced a fine run when breaking well from trap six. He led and ran on well to hold the challenge of 'Minister Hill' by a length in a fast 30.13 (550 yards). Oliver Flynn (Waterford) is the owner.

Heat eight saw res. F 'Metric Daisy' having to deal with a trap one draw, and she proved up to the task as she tracked well at the first bend to take up the running down the back and come home an impressive winner by five and a half lengths from 'Business Doc' in a good 30.39 for owner Larry Byrne (Enniscorthy).

Heat nine saw the start of a quick double for Stephen and Helen Wadsworth when 'Compass Trevor' also scored from trap one when leading all the way to hold 'Humble Power' by a length in 30.45. In heat ten, 'Compass Noel' made it three in a row for trap one as he was four lengths too good for 'Solent Wambam' in 30.63.

Heat eleven saw the Geoffrey Sharrock (Ballyruane)-owned dog emerge a clear winner as he came home a fine four lengths ahead of 'Ashwood Finbarr' in a good 30.35. The last heat saw favourite 'A Blonde Tail', owned by Michael Gordon (Enniscorthy), score a nice three and a half length win over ' Woodstock Honcho' in a time of 30.50.

The ninth race, an A2, saw res. T 'Alnwick Oscar', owned by Patrick Sheil, return to winning ways when leading all the way to beat 'Clonroche Lark' by three lengths in a fast 28.91. 'Martiova' was another trap one winner when leading and running on well to score by two and a half lengths for owner Philip Moorhead (Enniscorthy) in a time of 29.17.

Race one, an A4, saw the Myles and Padge Roban-owned 'Elite Tiger' go on at the first bend to score a convincing win in 29.28. The second race, an A3, was an all the way trap to line win for ' Bruisers Pride', owned by Gary Byrne (Co. Wicklow), getting out well from his trap four draw to score by two and a half lengths in a fine 28.99.

Monday's card featured the semifinals of the Nobooth For Gary Unraced Bitch Stake, and both saw the winners come from behind. 'Piercestown Bag' left herself plenty to do before joining leader 'Saltmills Lady' off the final bend to go on to score by two lengths in 29.57, while 'Bar The One' did well to get the third spot for this week's final.

The second semi saw 'Hot Favourite' do some clever tracking and some fine back straight pace carried her to the front past leader 'Sugar Lady' off the last bend. She ran on strongly to score by three lengths in 29.53. 'Arcaton Linda' ran on well for third spot.
