Model reps. seek combined events success in Navan

BEST OF luck to all Wexford athletes who will be competing in the Leinster combined events championships this coming weekend. This multi-events competitions for Juveniles, Seniors and Masters will take place in Claremont Stadium, Navan, Co. Meath, on Sunday next.

There will be an athletics coaching course in Wexford on September 12, with the venue Murrintown Community Centre. The course will take place from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are level one courses scheduled for Waterford and Kilkenny for the same month. If there is enough interest in the county we will be able to get one in Wexford. Could clubs contact John Joe Doyle (053-9120960/085-1744481) with numbers for level one. We need 15-20 people to have a chance of getting one in Wexford.

The annual Mick Murphy memorial four miles road race will take place on Saturday, September 4, in Ferns at 5.30 p.m. Entries can be made online at www.runireland.com or they will be taken on the day from 4 p.m. at Ferns Community Centre. The race is open to runners, joggers and walkers alike - everyone is more than welcome to enter. Postrace refreshments will be in The Courtyard, Ferns, with a video of the race and prizegiving then taking place in The Thatch pub. For more information contact Luke Kehoe on 087-3222914.

The Kilmore 10km road race will take place on Saturday, September 11. Full details on www.kilmoreathletics.com.

The Oylegate half marathon took place on a lovely sunny morning on Sunday last, and the race resulted in Wexford winners in both the men's and ladies' races. David Barron (Slaney Olympic) led from the start of the 13.1 miles race and maintained a strong pace to win in a time of 74.09. In the ladies' race, Jackie Carty (Kilmore A.C.) repeated her win from the inaugural running of this event last year as she was a clear winner in a time of 85.30 from Mary Sweeney (St. Finbarr's A.C.) and Dena Hogan (Racing 795).

The second race in the Adidas series (that takes place in the Phoenix Park and which acts as a build-up to the Dublin City Marathon in October) took place on Saturday morning last, with the Frank Duffy ten miles road race seeing an overseas winner in the shape of Scottish native Andy Douglas. Myles Gibbons (S.B.R.) was the first Wexford man home, finishing 51st out of a field of almost 5,000 runners, clocking a time of 59.10 for the ten miles distance. Pádraig Moriarty (Slaney Olympic) was next home in a time of 59.54, while David Leonard (S.B.R.) posted a PB of 1.04.45. Well done to all other Wexford competitors.

Congratulations to Colin Nolan for being awarded Wexford Creamery athlete of the month for July.

The next mile challenge organised by D.M.P. will be held tonight (Wednesday) on the athletics track at Sinnottstown Lane, Wexford. Please note the earlier starting time of 7 p.m., due to the shorter evenings. The challenge is open to all, both runners and walkers, and a further challenge will be held on September 6. Best of luck to all Wexford athletes who will compete in the annual Rockford road race this coming Saturday (August 28). The race takes place in Tinryland, Co. Carlow, and is one of the best races of its kind in the country.

Adamstown A.C. will again be hosting its open crosscountry meeting in September. The event will feature crosscountry races for both Juveniles and Seniors and will take place on Sunday, September 19, at 12 noon. More information from Ann O'Gorman on 087-7434470.
