Buggy gets back on track
GAVIN BUGGY got his AllIreland Senior singles campaign back on track as he was victorious in the first round of the qualifiers, defeating Raymond Cunningham from Cavan in comprehensive fashion on a 21-9, 21-4 scoreline in Ballymore Eustace on Sunday last.
This win came just 24 hours after Buggy and Paul Lambert qualified for the final of the Leinster Senior doubles after a performance right out of the top drawer, and one of Wexford's most impressive handball results in the small court in recent years in an All-Ireland series.
The opposition was Eoin Kennedy and Egin Jensen from Dublin, an awesome pair in the 60 x 30, and, considering the performance Kennedy put in a week before in thumping Buggy 21-4, 21-2, it was going to be a stiff challenge for the Wexford men.
It was a challenge met head on though, and their performance was brilliant. They took the opening set 21-18 and, when they had gained the upper hand, they drove home their dominance and completed a fantastic 21-10 win in the second game.
This win means the firsttime partnership have accounted for Michael 'Duxie' Walsh and Timmy Clifford in the quarterfinal, Eoin Kennedy and Egin Jensen in the semifinal, and they now have the final to look forward to against Tom Sheridan and Brian Carroll from Meath. While the Royal partnership is very good, the Wexford men will carry great confidence into the final in two weeks' time.
David Redmond bowed out of the Junior singles at the semi-final stage when he lost out to William Love from Kilkenny on a 21-8, 21-8 scoreline.
Malachy Whelan was one of three Wexford winners in the Junior 'B' singles last week as the Castlebridge man continued his comeback season with a hugely-impressive demolition job over Ger Anthony (Kilkenny), 21-10, 21-6.
Paul Lambert secured his spot in the next round when he also defeated a Kilkenny player, Seán Quigley, on a 21-11, 21-17 scoreline.
Darren O'Toole scored yet another win for the Model county when he beat Dublin's Rob Farrelly 21-12, 21-17 in another very impressive display from the Coolgreany man.
It looks like it will be Wexford's title to throw away with four still standing, and an all-Wexford quarter-final is just a few days away, with Paul Lambert set to do battle with his Junior 'B' doubles partner, Peter Hughes, in an eagerly-awaited clash.
Malachy Whelan, joined by Castlebridge clubmate John Roche, came through an all-Wexford clash in the Leinster Junior 'B' doubles when they beat Fergal McWilliams and Martin Doran in a great game (21-18, 13-21, 21-6).
Marguerite Byrne-Gore booked her place in the next round of the ladies' Junior singles as she proved far too good for Kildare's Sinéad Galloghy, with the St. Mary's lady in awesome form in a 21-9, 21-6 victory.
Benny Doyle received a walkover in the Golden Masters 'A' singles, but Tony Breen had to play some terrific handball when he beat John Rossiter from Carlow in the Emerald Masters ' A' singles on a 21-12, 21-13 scoreline.
Luke Connors and Andy Cash bowed out of the Leinster Minor singles when they went down heavily, 21-6, 21-3, to Eamonn Hennessy and Paul Malone from Kilkenny.
It was also Leinster Handball Convention weekend, and the traditional Delegates' Cup match saw Tom Rossiter and Ricky Barron lose out in the final on a 15-14 scoreline against Laois opposition.
Tom Rossiter was reelected for a third year as Leinster Chairman, and it will be his final season. He was almost joined in a top position by Ricky Barron who was narrowly defeated in a vote for the Leinster Juvenile Chairman by Pat Kelly from Louth.
At the Convention, G.A.A. Handball co-ordinator Chris Curran announced that €9 million is to be pumped into a major development in Croke Park that will see a new handball centre being constructed.
The new arena will include four 40 x 20 courts and one of these will have three glass walls.
There will be a new state of the art 60 x 30 court while there will also be numerous one-wall courts on site. It's hoped the project will be fully complete in time for the 2012 World handball championships that will be hosted in Ireland.
