Wexford trio excel

Wednesday February 24 2010

THREE WEXFORD players had starring roles in Cork last weekend as W.I.T. retained the Ashbourne Cup camogie title. The triumphant team was captained by Ursula Jacob from fullforward, while left half-forward Katrina Parrock followed in the footsteps of left half-back Stacey Redmond by capturing the coveted player of the tournament award.

W.I.T. accounted for University of Ulster Jordanstown in the semifinal on Saturday, while U.C.C. defeated U.C.D. by the narrowest of margins.

Ursula Jacob and Karen Kelly (Waterford) were in flying form as they enjoyed a relatively easy passage to the final at C.I.T. Full-forward and captain Jacob scored 14 while Kelly, beside her in the corner, notched 1-1.

All over the pitch, W.I.T. were well on top in this clash and never looked to be in any real danger. Midfielder Katrina Parrock got through a huge amount of work and was desperately unlucky not to decorate her performance with a deserved goal, as she was twice denied late on by saves from U.U.J. goalkeeper, Eleanor Mallon.

Mallon was a big reason why the margin between the sides wasn't larger, as she also pulled off stops to deny Kelly in the second-half.

In the final, W.I.T. were efficient in most sectors while U.C.C. suffered from an over-reliance on Cork players Orla Cotter and Denise Cronin, though centreback Fionnuala Carr (Down) also put in a solid performance. Ultimately though, W.I.T's better economy from scoring opportunities was what swung the game when it was in the melting pot after Cronin scored a brilliant goal for U.C.C. in the 39th minute.

In a low-scoring first-half, the sides traded blows and, while chances were hard to come by, W.I.T. led by 0-3 to 0-2 at the interval.

W.I.T. produced a brilliant start to the second-half, however, and points from Parrock, Jacob, Redmond and Karen Kelly extended their lead. Cronin struck to narrow the gap again though, dispossessing Redmond before soloing from halfway and unleashing a brilliant shot from just outside the 20metre line.

When Cronin's midfield partner, Jill Horan, pointed immediately after, there was a point between the sides and it was all to play for, but U.C.C. could not muster an equaliser.

Instead, Parrock responded for W.I.T. and then Jacob won the resultant puck-out and slotted over to put the margin back to three points. After Cotter and Power exchanged points, U.C.C's Horan had a goal chance but Kristina Kenneally was equal to it and W.I.T. managed to hold out thanks to some good defending.

Four of the winning team were selected on the Ashbourne AllStar team for their performances over the weekend, namely star turn Katrina Parrock, Ursula Jacob, Collete Dormer (Kilkenny) and Patricia Jackman (Waterford).

Scorers in the 2-10 to 0-3 semifinal win were Ursula Jacob (1-4, 0-1 free), Karen Kelly (1-1), Ann Dalton (0-1 free), Denise Gaule, Marie O'Neill, Katie Power and Michelle Quilty (0-1 each).

The final was won by 0-11 to 1-6, with Jacob hitting four points, two from frees. O'Neill and Katrina Parrock added 0-2 apiece, with Stacey Redmond, Power and Kelly completing the scoring. Incidentally, Parrock was completed a fine personal double as she was also named player of the tournament after the freshers competition earlier in the season.

? Wexford trio Mark Molloy (St. James'), David Doyle-Murphy (Cloughbawn) and Seán Gaul (St. Anne's) were on the W.I.T. Trench Cup Senior football panel for their 0-16 to 2-4 quarter-final win over University of Ulster Coleraine in Rochfortbridge, Co. Westmeath, on Wednesday last.
