COURTOWN

The week in Courtown was another great success for the Junior members, with 60 turning out on Thursday last to take part in the Junior Captain's (Darragh Hobbs) prize. The weather was good, with only a shower on the last two holes threatening to spoil the day. The course as always was in splendid condition and this was reflected in the scores returned, with three players carding 41 points.

Darragh Brennan returned the best 41 points to take the prize in the boys' section, while Becky Mountaine took the honours in the girls with a score of 35 points. All the players got a prize. Captain Denis Howell was on hand for the presentation and afterwards thanked Paddy Dore and his committee for all the work that they put in through the year. The fruits of their labour can be seen in the reduction in handicap of many of our young players. Paddy in turn thanked all the Junior members for their support and for the manner in which they promote themselves and our great club.

On a side note, I was talking with a young man on Sunday who was beaming after his round with his father. John Bolger Jnr., a young fellow of twelve, playing off twelve, returned a score of 42 points in the open singles.

We take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to the last two teams in the final of the Finn Trophy which will be played here in Courtown on Thursday. The ladies from Dunmore East will take on Woodbrook. The timesheet for this long-running competition, sponsored by the Finn family from Gorey, is reserved from 11.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

This weekend we will have two singles competitions, Saturday's sponsored by John Coone, and on Sunday a singles medal sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors. We would remind all our members that on Saturday evening we will host our 'Strictly Come Dancing' with a twist. This promises to be a night of entertainment which I feel a lot of competitors might regret taking part in, but we can promise a lot of laughs along the way, so come on out to witness the dazzling dresses and dress suits and some very unlikely candidates take to the floor to strut their stuff. Come early to be sure of a front row seat.

Saturday, August 21, fourball (any combination): 1, Barry Fitzgerald (7), John O'Connor (15), 44 points; 2, Mick Morrissey (5), Myles Gibbons (12), 43 points; 3, Barry Symes (2), John Sheridan (12), 42 points (last nine).

Sunday, August 22, open singles sponsored by Wyse Estates: 1, Larry Gainfort (22, Scarke), 45 points; 2, John Bolger Jnr. (12), 42 points; 3, Matthew O'Dowd (20), 39 points (last nine); gross, Alan McDonald (4), 33 points; 4, Ian McGirr (9), 39

points.

COURTOWN LADIES

'La Creme' sponsored the Scotch foursomes competition for the ladies on August 17. It was a hugely-successful open day as 212 people played and 33 different clubs were represented.

The lady Captain, Marion Siggins, welcomed Marian McKenna and thanked her for her very generous sponsorship. A big crowd gathered for the presentation where many 'pick-out' prizes of lovely costume jewellery were available for those present. La Creme have been sponsoring for eight years, and Marian McKenna thanked the club and its members for their support to her.

The high scoring continued in the club last week, with two very popular local members, Mary Doyle and Joan O'Sullivan, winning with a fabulous score of 48 points. Both Mary and Joan work in La Creme and Marian McKenna said that 'both work like gods and must have played like gods'. On the day both ladies were delighted to accept the vouchers for first prize. Vouchers were also presented to the other prize winners.

Open day sponsored by La Creme, Scotch foursomes: 1, Mary Doyle (24) and Joan O'Sullivan (33), (28), 48 points; 2, Pat Kinsella (18) and Irene Poole (19), (18), 44 points; gross, Marguerite Hamill (9) and Niamh Kielthy (9), Greystones (9), 26 points; 3, Ann Targett (19) and Frances Sinnott (27), (22), 42 points; 4, Lisa Smyth (25) and Anne Smyth (27), (26), 41 points.

ENNISCORTHY

As the fever of the golfing season draws to a close and the days grow ever shorter, it heralds the approach of the final of the mid-week competitions and the Champion of Champions competition. This week added to the illustrious winners of the past several months is Peter O'Shea, and next week will see the last golfer qualify. Details of the draw and qualifiers can be accessed through the club's blog.

AMPM Safety & Environmental Ltd. nine-hole mid-week gents' semi-open: 1, Peter O'Shea (14), 23 (back nine); Cl1, William Rackard (5), 20; Cl2, Brendan Flood (14), 23; Cl3, Billy Whelan (21), 22; Senior, John R. Jordan (19), 22.

The Enniscorthy Golf Club Juniors had a busy week when they travelled with a large contingent from the county to play Pembrokeshire at Newport Links, but for the first time in 20 years they went down to a strong Welsh side by nine games to seven. Then for Jamie Dreelan and Seán Mernagh it was down to Dungarvan together with new course record holder, Graham Donohoe, to play in the Irish Boys' Amateur Close Championship. Unfortunately, the travelling was too much and our Junior representatives were knocked out early in the tournament.

There was a ray of light, however, when Jack Leacy, Dungarvan, whose parents hail from Enniscorthy town, was winner of the Under-16 trophy with a 295. The Enniscorthy Girls' and Boys' Open will take place Wednesday when clubs from all over the region will converge on our course. Best wishes to everyone involved.

The major competition last weekend was the Walter Bourke & Son-sponsored Intermediate Scratch (10-18) off the blues - stroke. We were delighted to see so many visitors for this competition and Barry had a very busy time in the clubhouse serving excellent fare as usual.

Results: first gross, Ted Morrissey (10), 77; second gross, Colin Garry (10), 80; third gross, Tony Sheehan (13, Gold Coast), 81; first nett, Tom Clince (17), 69 (back nine); second nett, Paul Roche (18), 69 (back nine); third net, Brian Sinnott (15). 70. We would like to thank our sponsor. Number played: 151. C.S.S.: 73.

This competition was followed in the evening with the club-sponsored reversed mixed: 1, Stella Byrne (36) and John Byrne (15), 29.25; 2, Maeve McCauley (17) and Michael Wickham (13), 33.5; gross, Elizabeth Browne (15) and Maurice Donohoe (3), 40 (last six).

Well done to Mark Hogan, winner of the Captain's prize (Tom Clifford), and apologies for the late posting of the results. Mark, who is a well-known football enthusiast, holds a post on the Wexford ISRS soccer referees' panel, and now we also see his potential as a great golfer. Mark has been a member for many years and this win is a dream come true for him. We trust that this is the start of many more wins in the future.

The final day of the competition was to be held on Sunday, July 18, but ,due to the rain, it was postponed to Sunday, August 8, with the play-off in the evening.

Results: 1, Mark Hogan (20), 100; 2, Jim Mackey (9), 100.5 (last nine); gross, Jason Rackard (4), 111; 3, Brendan Flood (17), 100.5; 4, Maurice Nolan (10), 102; 5, Karl Cullen (11), 102.5; 6, Liam Dunbar (13), 102.5; 7, Conor Flynn (13), 104.5; committee, Murty Dempsey (7), 74; front 18, Des Jacob (14), 67; Seniors, Paddy Dobbs (11), 108.5; last nine, Paul Connolly (9), 33.5; past Captains, Matt O'Connor (19), 109.5. A total of 283 played. S.S. Friday, July 16, and Saturday, July 17: 73; Sunday, August 8: 72.

Next weekend's major is the Bobby Jones Shield sponsored by Byrne's Bookshop, and course sanding will take place, weather permitting, on Monday, August 30.

Last weekend saw the August Medal in both the men's and ladies' sections. In the men's, last year's Captain, Paul Murphy, won on a countback from Martin McDonnell, both on fantastic scores of 68. Congrats to Paul on winning his first medal in the club.

In third place was Brian Farrell with the best gross, and a nett score of 69. In the ladies' medal, Anne Donnellan continued her good recent great form to win from Ruth Dormer. Anne, who won the lady Captain's prize only last week, won with a fine score of 73.

Once again a very enjoyable evening was held in the clubhouse after the Friday nines, sponsored by Peter and Terry O'Reilly. The ladies' competition was won by Fionnuala McGlynn, and the men's competition was won by Captain Joe O'Donnell.

Saturday saw the always very popular event - the parent and child competition, where the future stars of Seafield were on show. This was a very enjoyable outing, and produced some great golf. Winners - for the third year in a row - were Oscar and Derek Maltby. Oscar is now playing off 24, having come down from 28 this summer, and helped dad Derek get around the course with lots of advice and encouragement!! Well done Oscar, and Derek.

The next few weeks will see Seafield teams involved in the Leinster finals of two very worthwhile charity events, firstly for the Musgrave Challenge in The Hermitage on August 26 (Team - Brian Farrell, Mark Farrell, Barry Byrne), and then in the 3Ts in St. Margaret's on September 1 (Team - Mary Ryan, Brian Farrell, Maureen Collins, Derek Kavanagh). Good luck to both teams.
