BALLYMONEY

Wednesday's nine-hole competition once again produced some vey good scoring from an impressive attendance. Justin O'Leary (13) was the eventual winner with 21 points. Club Handicap Secretary Andrew Byrne (20) made a welcome return to the prizes, as his 20 points were enough to hold off newcomer Tom Whelan (18) for second place.

Sunday's competition was strokeplay (from the green tees). The weather was fine and so was the scoring, especially among the early starters. The wind picked up in the afternoon and the later starters struggled to match the scores posted early in the morning.

Early riser Christy White (13) was out in the first group and signed for an excellent 79 strokes. His nett 66 was good enough for first place. Declan Hayden (17) had nett 67 for second spot and the almost ever-present Gavin Doyle (9) had a most impressive nett 69 to take the third prize. Front nine prize went to Seán Doyle (17) and back nine prize went to David Murphy (7).

Tara Meadows matchplay third round: Pat Miskella beat Andy Carroll.

This Wednesday sees a non-qualifying nine-hole and next Saturday there is a roll-up stableford. The committee would like to see the outstanding third round matchplay games concluded soon.

James Larkin and Paddy Monaghan filled the next two spots, each separated again by a single shot.

The gross went to Tom Doyle, brother of the winner, with a 62, and the nines went to Dave O'Connor and Val Amiranhov. Val is a relatively new member of the Society and it won't be too long before he gets into the main prizes.

COURTOWN

The President's prize, Malachy Travers, proved to be a big draw over the weekend. The timesheets were full for both of the qualifiers on Friday and again on Saturday morning. There was then a nine-hole shotgun start on the back nine for the best 27 nett and three best gross scores on Saturday evening at 5.30 p.m.

Malachy Travers Jnr. came very close to claiming his father's prize, needing a birdie on the tenth to clinch victory but he had to settle for a par, a score that most of us would be happy with although Malachy was beaten into third place with his five. After the golf, there followed a great evening's entertainment with Bobby Burns, and members and guests danced the night away until the early hours. The overall winner was delighted to accept first prize from President Malachy Travers, a trophy which somewhat resembled the Sam Maguire Cup.

After the President's, Sunday's competition was an invitation ladies' and gents' singles sponsored by Dominic Smith Electrical. This too proved to be a full timesheet for the wonderful prizes that were on offer.

The rest of the week is going to be very busy with the timesheets having a lot of bookings from Thursday to Sunday. On Thursday we again have the very popular Thomas Funge Memorial Trophy for boys and girls (8 a.m. to 2.30 p.m). Friday: Prospect Park Juniors and Tara Cove ladies.

Please note that the annual ecumenical service takes place on Friday evening. There will not be a club competition on Saturday as we will host Prospect Park and Tara Cove from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Sunday there will be an invitation fourball (any combination).

President's prize: 1, Frank Fahy (10), 56 points; 2, Pat Byrne (14), 55 points; 3, Malachy Travers (4), 55 points; gross, Brendan Sheehan (4), 44 points; 4, John Furlong (8), 54 points; 5, Mark Stephens (17), 53 points; 6, Myles Gibbons (12), 52 points; 7, Denis Howell (17), 52 points; 8, Liam Redmond (10), 52 points; 9, Edward Sheehan (11), 50 points; 10, Tom Foster (13), 50 points; past Presidents, Jerry O'Riordan (20), 32 points; best nett first 18, Michael Howard (14), 36 points; vets, Rodney Farrell (13), 35 points.

There was a great turn-out for last Thursday's open fourball. A total of 116 played with visitors from ten clubs. We got some very complimentary comments from these ladies about the course and how they found it a good challenge. Westgate Design, our sponsors for the day, were most generous with their prizes, lovely gift bags including vouchers for their magnificent shop in town.

From September 1 there will be an open fourball (14 holes) competition every Wednesday, and after the competition is completed there is no problem in continuing to play to the 18th.

The very best of luck to our Senior Cup team who are in the finals on this coming Friday in Cork. Ladies will be scarce in Wexford Golf Club that day as there is a large contingent of supporters travelling by coach and cars. Ladies, don't forget to be back for next week's competition. Our Intermediate Cup team is also playing a match at the weekend against The Curragh in Kilkenny on Sunday. Good luck girls.
