NEW ROSS SENIORS

This Thursday, July 22, we have three-person teams taking part in the Meals on Wheels event. The best two cards will be used in determining the winners of our own competition among the group. We resume as normal with our weekly outing next week with the draw at 10.45 a.m. sharp.

Well done to our colleagues, John Murphy and Tommy Grennan, both of whom figured amongst the prizewinners in the recent Seniors Alliance played at Callan Golf Club. The next Alliance outing is at the Gold Coast, Dungarvan, on Wednesday, August 12.

The sincere sympathy of all members goes to our ever-helpful barman, Anthony Connick, on the recent sad death of his brother at the young age of 34 years.

COURTOWN

The past weekend certainly belonged to the ladies at Courtown, with the final day of the lady Captain's prize, Marion Siggins, taking place on Saturday. The clubhouse was packed to the rafters for what was a great night's entertainment on Saturday evening, and after an introduction by lady President, Beatrice Griffiths, Marion took to the podium and delivered a very well-received speech. There is more information in the ladies section.

On Sunday we had a gents' singles sponsored by AIB. Those who were out early in the day had the best of the weather. However, the conditions changed in the afternoon and the golfing was not such a pleasant experience. Next weekend we can look forward to more glamour as we will have the lady President's prize, Beatrice Griffiths, on Saturday. On Sunday we will have the ever-popular singles sponsored by Lacey's Menswear.

AIB singles: 1, Noel McCartan (12), 40 points; 2, John Sheridan (13), 39 points; 3, Kieran Kenny (16), 37 points; gross, Neville Steedman (2), 32 points; 4, Ciarán Sheridan (15), 37 points (last nine); vets, Aidan Lynch (26), 33 points.

Men's nine-hole stableford: 1, Vincent Kavanagh (11), 22 points; 2, Tom Kitt (20), 21 points.

Niamh Doran had a sweet victory in the lady Captain's, Marion Siggins, prize on Saturday last. Niamh, a Kilkenny native, sported her black and amber colours as she set out with her playing partners, Doris Doyle and Celine O'Riordan, on Saturday. Niamh is a Gorey-based Garda and she has been a member of Courtown for only a short time. This makes her victory all the more significant as she has taken to the fairways of Courtown with great ease.

In her acceptance speech she referred to this win as her 'All-Ireland'. She thanked her playing partner, Stasia O'Loughlin, for keeping her focused on Tuesday in the pouring rain. Courtown this week was somewhat like St.Andrew's in that it gave back on Saturday what it had taken on Tuesday. It was testament to the lady Captain's popularity that 155 ladies set out in the atrocious weather conditions to play golf.

However, Niamh needed no help from either Kilkenny or Wexford as she played great golf to secure 41 points on day two. This score coupled with her first round score of 36 points gave her a total score of 77 points - ten points ahead of the rest of the field which ensured she claimed first prize of the gorgeous bracelet sponsored by Marion, our lady Captain.

The stunning diamond bracelet which was presented to Niamh by Marion was the envy of all ladies that night. Marion thanked her hard-working committee members for their help in organising her special day. She lavished much praise on James Timmons, the greenkeeper, and his staff, the club professional John Coone, the bar and catering staff.

Marion complimented her husband Eamon, a past captain himself, for his sterling support during her busy year. Her three beautiful daughters, Michelle, Caroline and Lauren, came to the club to support their mum on her special celebration. The clubhouse was thronged to capacity on Saturday night as Marion enthralled all present with her very fine and humorous speech. Marion showed herself to be a fine articulate, stylish lady Captain who represents the ladies and Courtown in co-operation with Denis Howell ,the club Captain. ' Quench' provided the music for the lively dancing which took place in the clubhouse and the upbeat atmosphere was enjoyed by all which continued until late in the night.

Congratulations to our Challenge Cup team which won their quarter-final round in horrific weather conditions in New Ross on Saturday last. They beat Tramore with all ladies winning their matches.

Team: Eleanor Shanley, Maeve Duke, Eileen Wheeler, Margaret Dooley and Dympna Doyle. Subs: Rita Mahoney and Rosie Martin.

Well done to Kate Sheehan and Julie McCartan who qualified in the Mid-Leinster District final of the Australian Spoons, which was held in Kilkenny. They now go forward to the national finals at Carrick-on-Shannon on August 23.

In the race for golfer of the year, sponsored by Molloy's, Markie Murphy leads the charge, with the Battlestown veteran on 165 points, followed closely by Paul Barden on 162 and Lorcan Barden and Val Molloy, both on 159.

SEAFIELD

The Friday nines are well under way in Seafield and the Captains have introduced a new format this year of a shotgun start, which is proving very popular and encouraging great banter in the clubhouse afterwards.

Friday nines sponsored by BL Neon Signs: 1, Gary O'Leary (16), 22 points; 2, Brian Farrell (7), 20 points; 3, Willie Edwards (18), 19 points.

Last Saturday, the weather was fantastic for the fun event of the Bermuda Day, where the normal golf course etiquette was temporarily suspended in favour of Bermuda shorts and grass skirts!! The fashion was great, the craic was mighty, and the sun shone! What more can you ask for?

Mixed Bermuda fun day rumble sponsored by Philip Sherwood: 1, Joe O'Donnell, Mary Ryan, Brendan O'Mara, 76 points; 2, Páraic McKenna, Peter Gilbourne, Niall Finnegan, 75 points.

There was some great scoring in the men's fourball better ball despite the heavy rain on Sunday, and great rivally between the Farrell brothers, with younger brother Mark, and his partner Barry Byrne, coming out on top - by one point only from Mark's brother, Brian, and his partner, Paul Nangle. Guess who has the bragging rights in the Farrell household this week?

Men's fourball betterball: 1,Mark Farrell (14) and Barry Byrne (18), 49 points; 2, Brian Farrell (8) and Paul Nangle (11), 48 points.

On the inter-club scene, our Senior Cup team made a tame exit from this year's series. Played in Bunclody, they went down to a very strong team from Kilkenny who had two plus one players and three scratch players. The Rosslare team was Tiernan Rossiter, Nick O'Connor, Philip Balfe, Gary Collins and Conor Kelly.

The only remaining team now is the J.B. Carr team who await the winner of Carlow and Laois.

Members are reminded that there will be a limited number of spaces for open week online at 10 a.m. on Friday next, July 23.
