NEW ROSS SENIORS: A fine day, a big field, record scoring - that was the picture emanating from our weekly outing on Thursday last.

In perfect underfoot conditions due to the drying wind of the previous few days, it was obvious that scoring would be of a high standard and that was the way it turned out. With the spring growth now becoming apparent, the greens are now returning to their pristine best and becoming a pleasure to putt on once again.

With the 17 four-person teams perfectly balanced, the format dictated that all four players' scores counted on the four par threes. This certainly gave an added bite to the competition because it was on these self-same holes that the day was won and lost.

Keeping their game well together, the quartet of John Murphy (15), Robert O'dwyer (18), Tom O'neill (18) and newcomer Martin Furlong (20) had two nines of 58/55 to give them outright victory with a record 113 points.

Three points behind in second place with another great score of 110 were Denis Kirwan (11), Michael Long (19), Seán Ryan (21) and Jamesie Murphy (23). A better back nine (55 v. 54) and a total of 104 points saw Jim Ryan (Ross, 17), Pat Ryan (18), Paul Laffan (20) and John O'neill (20) take third prize. The fourth prize sponsored by Harry Rheinhart went to Jimmy Furlong (12), John F. Roche (17), Liam Glasheen (19) and Tony Wallace (19), also with 104 points.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Aidan Kent (ninth hole) and Frank Boyle on the eleventh.

We gave a warm welcome to three new members, Donie Cody, Martin Furlong (who incidentally made a winning debut) and Liam Glasheen (who picked up a prize as well), the trio all joining us for the first time. Just a reminder to latecomers, the draw each week is at 10.40 a.m. sharp. Be there in person or you will not be included in the draw for teams.

Panel lists for the various team competitions are currently posted in the locker room. Ladies are asked to check them out and remove their names if they are not available for selection.

COURTOWN LADIES

The semi-finals of the Azure ladies' Winter league matchplay were played in clear, sunny conditions on Sunday last. The first match was played as in the original line-up of Pat Walters (16) and Louise Hofler (31) versus Eileen Moriarty (27) and Ann Mcnamara (26). The match was won by Pat Walters and Louise Hofler.

Holidays and illness forced two substitutions in the second match. Helen Mundow (36) was substituted by the more experienced Julie Mccartan (22) who played with Kate Sheehan (17). Frances Swords (28) stood in for Siobhán Freeney (18), partnered by Bernie Collins (28). Kate Sheehan and Julie Mccartan won this match.

The finals will be played on Sunday, March 4. Good luck to all involved. There will also be a ninehole fourball on the day and the presentation will be at 6 p.m.

Last Tuesday's golf was played in quite blustery and cold conditions, all the more reason to congratulate Lynne on bringing in a super score of 30 points over 13 holes! Well done to her.

Results: 1, Lynne Copeland (31), 30 points; 2, Mary Halford (24), 27 points; 3, Anne Targett (19), 25 points.

ENNISCORTHY

On Sunday last there was a huge turn-out as the members of Enniscorthy Golf Club welcomed in its new Captains for 2012. After arriving to the club in great style, new Captains Kevin Frayne and Eimear Mcgrath got the golfing year started by hitting fine drives to the first hole, following a celebratory tipple on the first tee-box in the company of 2012 Presidents John Daly and Mary Bolger.

The competition format was a four-person scramble and, with the glorious weather and the course and grounds in great condition, it was a most enjoyable round for the 150 or so members who played. Afterwards in the clubhouse, the healthy crowd were fed and watered by Barry and his team and a great evening's entertainment was had by all.

Captains' drive-in scramble, Sunday, February 19, front nine competition (eight-hole): Mick Healy, Alan Buckley, Ernesto De Fiore, Ursula Cousins, 20.3 nett; back nine competition (nine-hole): Tony O'neill, Martin Sludds, Mag Mooney, Mary Halligan, 22.5 nett.

Next weekend, February 25-26, sees the last of the current Winter open fourball competitions (visitors €15). The following weekend (March 3-4) sees the kick off of the men's club competitions with the first event sponsored by the solicitors.

The next open Seniors event will be on Thursday, March 8, sponsored by David Garahy (visitors €15). The timesheet is open online at www.enniscorthygc.ie or by contacting the club at 05392-37600 or 05392-33191.
