No joy for Bróna in big Barcelona sprint test
SLANEY OLYMPIC sprinter Bróna Furlong finished out of the qualifying spots as she made an early appearance at the European athletics championships in Barcelona yesterday (Tuesday).
The runner from Caim was one of the first competitors out on the tracks, in the third heat of the 400 metres hurdles, near the start of the morning session.
She failed to match the time she set in making the grade for the event and finished seventh of the eight participants in the race.
Bulgarian Vania Stambolova was quickest, with athletes from Britain and Russia also making it through to the second round of the event.
Bróna Furlong was three and a half seconds off the winning pace, though she came home ahead of Turkey's Ozge Gurler.
The Wexford competitor has a further chance of glory later in the week, as member of the Irish 4 x 400 metre relay squad.
