Joseph's on course for semis

Wednesday July 28 2010

ST. JOSEPH'S maintained their dominance over Duffry Rovers when two Philip Cullen goals powered them to victory in this Junior 'C' football championship Group A game in Páirc Charman recently.

As a result, they maintained their push to qualify for the semi-finals again, having beaten the same opponents in the penultimate round last year.

However, roles were reversed five nights later when they met again in the All-County League Division 2 decider, with a late flourish securing silverware for the Duffry.

The Bishopswater crew thrived in the wet weather which marred the championship tie, with Cullen getting his first goal in the opening ten minutes.

However, the Duffry were never too far behind and only trailed by 1-4 to 0-5 at the break after scores from Damien Fitzhenry and John McCarthy.

St. Joseph's opened up a four-point gap again but were pegged back before Cullen sealed success with his second major in the last quarter.

HOW THEY STAND

It's all to play for ahead of the last round in Group A, with everything hinging on the outcome of two games.

St. Joseph's have eight points after four rounds, with Starlights, Duffry Rovers and Gusserane all on six apiece.

Neither Shelmaliers nor Bannow-Ballymitty have any points, and they meet to determine who will avoid the relegation final.

St. Joseph's take on Gusserane, while Starlights will face Duffry Rovers.

St. Anne's, with eight points at present, are through from Group B, and the second spot will be filled either by St. Fintan's (six) or Buffers Alley (five), although the Gorey District men look better placed.
