GAA tighten belts
WEXFORD G.A.A. is no different to other units of the Association when it comes to financial difficulties, and the need to bring in major cuts relating to the preparations of their county teams. Earlier this year County Board officers set a system in place regarding expenditure and budgets for their backroom set-ups with the various county sides, but now they have taken the measures a step further.
Routine Wexford win
THE WEXFORD Senior hurlers began life without the great Damien Fitzhenry by forging a routine win over a limited Westmeath side in the opening round of Division 2 of the Allianz League before a small crowd in Cusack Park, Mullingar, on Sunday last.
Another U-21 rout
THE MINIMUM expected from the Wexford Under-21 footballers before Saturday's Leinster championship first round tie in St. Brigid's Park, Dowdallshill, was that they would be a lot more competitive than in 2009.
Six Leinster titles secured by locals
SIX WEXFORD boxers were celebrating recently after winning titles at the Leinster Boy 4, Youth 1 and 2 championships. In the Boy 4 semi-final, Gorey's David Kennedy beat Brendan Cummins from Dealgan 5-2, while Ryan Walsh of St. Ibar's was beaten 3-2 at the semi-final stage by Jason O'Reilly of Marble City.
Hurlers must step up
THIS WAS anything but a test of resolve for Wexford who still looked far from impressive as they eventually fashioned out a 14-point victory over a very limited Down outfit in this Allianz Hurling League Division 2 game at Wexford Park on Sunday last. While it was business as usual for Wexford and the collection of a further two points, with Down fighting the good fight during the 70 minutes, this was still a game which gave the 400-odd attendance little to enthuse over, with home followers left pondering their side's future and ability to move out of lower grade hurling.
Bunclody clinch crown
IDEAL CONDITIONS favoured the playing of the Martin Cullen Cup Minor football league final at Ballymurn on Sunday last where HWH-Bunclody deservedly came out on top by a four-point margin over a St. Martin's side that contributed handsomely to an entertaining game.
Wexford trio excel
THREE WEXFORD players had starring roles in Cork last weekend as W.I.T. retained the Ashbourne Cup camogie title. The triumphant team was captained by Ursula Jacob from fullforward, while left half-forward Katrina Parrock followed in the footsteps of left half-back Stacey Redmond by capturing the coveted player of the tournament award.
Clubs learn their fate
THE NEW championship format for the 2010 season was the main talking point after the draws were made in Enniscorthy on Wednesday night last.
League starts Friday night in Waterford
WEXFORD YOUTHS will be hoping to reach new heights when they open their Airtricity Division 1 league campaign away to local rivals Waterford United at the R.S.C. this Friday night.
SH challenge off
THE SENIOR hurling challenge game between Wexford and Kilkenny in aid of the McDonald Fire Fund will not go ahead in Oulart tonight (Wednesday) since the Cats are playing Tipperary in the Allianz League on Sunday next in Thurles.
Inside Sport
Footballers folded
FORGET THE result at Tinryland on Sunday; neither county would be chuffed with an O'Byrne Shield medal - indeed, not even a Cup victory - but the elation of the home triumph was of more morale importance in view of their upcoming NFL date with Wicklow in Aughrim on Sunday next. The final was more of a probe into the value of the second string rather than scooping worthless silver, and for 35 minutes the Barrowsiders looked more suited to a Junior competition than Leinster Senior challengers.
Molloy plays starring role for W.I.T.
MARK MOLLOY of St. James' played a significant role at midfield for W.I.T. in their 0-14 to 0-12 Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final victory over D.I.T. in Ballygunner on Wednesday last, setting up a meeting with a highly-fancied U.L. on Friday next in Dangan at 2 p.m.
Rovers hold top spot
SHAMROCK ROVERS hit Ballagh for three as they copper-fastened their lead at the top of Division 3. Two goals from Willie Dobbs and a further effort from Derek Whelan secured the points in a 3-0 victory.
Great to see Matt back in winners' enclosure
GOOD NEWS stories are all too rare in these dour, depression-filled times, so when we hear tales of a happy nature we should treasure them.
J4 side wins scoring feast
WANDERERS' J4 side hosted Swords on Saturday last in what turned out to be a very open encounter. The home side always appeared to have the edge and indeed were able to put the scores on the board to reflect their dominance.
