U.S. board role for Sheehan

Tuesday January 31 2012

A NEW ROSS COUNCILLOR has been appointed to a major American body.

Cllr. Michael Sheehan has been appointed as a Director of the Ireland United States Alumni Association - a board which unites all former US State Department participants and works with the US Government to promote greater cooperation between Ireland and the United States.

Each year, in association with Boston College, the US Embassy sponsors groups of individuals in exchange programmes based in Boston, Washington DC and other US cities. The Alumni association then works with former participants to remain connected and to work with the Embassy in developing future programmes and speakers.

'It's an honour for me to be on the Board and this position will give me access to senior officials, experts and high ranking government and business leaders,' said Cllr. Sheehan following his appointment.

' This position will offer me further opportunities to represent the people of Wexford and afford me the chance to ensure more investment, scholarships and collaborative programmes for the county,' he added.

Cllr. Sheehan has already engaged in discussions with embassy officials and leaders who he says will be instrumental in making the Kennedy 50 Celebrations in 2013, which will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy homecoming visit to Ireland, an even greater success.

'Over the next few weeks, we will be meeting Embassy officials to calibrate their input and to work on gaining access to senior US officials and organisations, whose endorsement is crucial to our celebrations,' he explained.

'With all the networking and collaborative opportunities ahead, it will be easier for me to ensure that any possible spin off or opportunities will be there for the people of County Wexford. It gives us a stronger voice and a chance of making a brighter future for all,' added the Fianna Fail councillor.
