A GOREY teenager is setting out on the experience of a lifetime as she travels to Uganda in Africa next month to help with charity work there. Sarah Redmond (16) daughter of Michael and Anna, of Bolacreen, Gorey, will travel to Kampala with two school friends from Rathdown secondary school in Glenageary, Dublin. Before they go they were tasked with raising funds for the charity, and to date they have raised nearly €5,000 between them. Sarah sent a big thank you to all who supported and helped at her bag packing fundraiser in Tesco recently, and all who donated to the good cause. She also thanked Tesco Gorey for allowing them to hold the fundraiser, and also Pettitt's Supervalu for their generous donation. She's very much looking forward to her trip and hopes to see where the money raised will be spent. Sarah will visit Hospice Africa Uganda which was founded by Dr. Anne Merriman in 1993. Dr. Merriman was inspired to set up the hospice after witnessing the terrible suffering of those with cancer who are sent home to die without support. Hospice Africa Uganda offers control of pain and symptoms during critical illness and end of life. The Hospice depends on regular donations, both locally and internationally, to help care for cancer, HIV/AIDS, and terminally ill patients. The girls will bring their donations directly to the Hospice Centre where they will work with the medical staff for two weeks. They will also help out at the local school. Due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, half of Uganda's population is under 15 years of age.
