Man with ten aliases in court under escort

MOTORING CHARGES MAN TO SIGN ON AT STATION DAILY

Wednesday March 03 2010

A MAN with multiple identities was brought to Enniscorthy District Court under prison officer escort last week.

James Connors, with an address at 5 Labra Park in Ballyfermot and a date of birth in August 1981, was before the court on charges of using a false Northern Ireland registration plate on a stolen red Seat Leon, of having no driving licence and of giving a false name.

The alleged offences were brought to the attention of the court by Garda Noel O'Gorman and dated back to January 31, at Island Road in Enniscorthy. During a previous court sitting, the Garda stated that the accused had ten aliases and that several bench warrants were outstanding against him.

Connors was remanded in custody on that occasion but applied to the High Court which set down terms of bail. When his name was called on Wednesday by court clerk Brian Leonard, there was no sign of the accused 28 year old.

However, after the judge had dealt with some family law matters, Connors arrived at Ardcavan in a prison van. Garda Inspector Pat Cody then informed the court that he was not in a position to proceed immediately.

Information about a car stolen on the other side of the Border had only recently been provided by the authorities in Northern Ireland, he explained. D.P.P. instructions were required and he sought an adjournment until March 3.

Connors was remanded in custody in the mean time, with consent to bail. The terms of bail required the defendant's own lodgement of €100, and an independent surety of € 3,000. He would also be expected to sign on daily at his local Garda station, to reside at 95 Ardmore Park in Waterford and to obey a curfew.

He was returned to jail after consulting his solicitor, Caitriona Walsh.
