LORCAN Allen was back to his bullish best form at Wexford County Council on Monday and he even felt suitably energised to take on one of his oldest and greatest foes ragwort.

Every road in the county is covered with ragweeds. How are we going to get rid of them?' asked Cllr. Allen, before answering his own question. We're going to have to pull them and burn them'.

Ambrose Madders of Wexford County Council said that there would be special allocations from the Government for dealing with ragwort and other weeds.

Other than that we can deal with it as we've always done,' he said. Nothing, we do nothing,' replied an animated Cllr. Allen.

County Manager Eddie Breen said that it would require a lot of man power to pull and burn all the ragworth on Wexford's roads. He said he believed there was a spray available to kill it, but that such an approach would have to be carefully considered mainly due to the potential impact on wildlife.

It's gone out of control in this county, we'll have to do something,' noted Mr. Breen, We can't go through another year like last year, it creates a lot of difficulties for farmers and members of the public.'

It's a dangerous weed and it's out of control,' concluded the County Manager.
