Ivory's closes for business after 68 years

Wednesday March 03 2010

A LANDMARK Gorey shop closed its doors for the last time at 2 p.m. last Sunday afternoon, much to the dismay of many locals.

Ivory's shop on Main Street has been trading for the past 68 years, and staff gathered with the Cushe family to bid a sad farewell to their customers last Sunday.

The family said they have been inundated by flowers, gifts, and calls of support since the news broke last week that they were closing.

The arrival of major supermarkets have seen a change in the business, but they continued to trade as a convenience store, and the deli was still very popular. However, the effects of the recession hit hard.

'With the rates and overheads, it's not possible to keep going,' said Billy, who said he was devastated at having to close. 'You have to work harder to make ends meet.'

Frances, Billy, and their children Liam and Muireann thanked all of their loyal staff and customers for their support over the years.
