Eyebrows raised over parade date
EYEBROWS were raised in certain quarters when it was revealed that Gorey's St. Patrick's Day Parade won't be held on St. Patrick's Day this year. Instead, it will be held on Sunday, March 16, while the festivities on the big day itself will be a lot more muted. In addition, the Catholic Church will be celebrating the feast of St. Patrick on Saturday, March 15.
Mons. Lory Kehoe of St. Michael's Parish explained that March 17 this year is Monday of Holy Week. The days of Holy Week and Easter Week rank above all others, and so the solemnity of St. Patrick must be transferred,' he said.
He explained that the general rule would be to transfer the feast to after the Second Sunday of Easter. But in order to keep a link with the civic celebrations, the feast of St. Patrick will be on Saturday March 15 this year,' he said.
