Big celebration to mark 21st competition
Wednesday March 03 2010
THE CURTAIN came down on the 21st annual Opportunity Knocks competition in Kilanerin Hall last Friday night after four weeks of entertainment.
Over 110 acts went on stage in the three qualifying rounds, and on Friday last, 37 acts contested the finals.
These had been selected by the adjudicators from the three qualifying rounds, and they competed in 18 different categories.
The adjudicators said that the standard this year was possibly the best yet and certainly provided four weeks of excellent variety entertainment for the capacity audiences in Kilanerin Hall.
To mark the coming of age of the twenty first Opportunity Knocks Talent Competition in Kilanerin, Fr. O'Brien was asked to cut a special 21st birthday cake supplied by Stafford Bakeries. Fr. O'Brien was also presented with a beautiful trophy by the organising committee in appreciation for bringing the idea to Kilanerin 21 years ago.
The adjudicators this year were Brendan Hayden and John Deignan who were assisted by John Spellacy. It was their unenviable task to make the awards on Friday last.
The Chairman of the Kilanerin Hall Committee, John Bardon, thanked all who had helped to make this year's competition another success. In particular, he thanked those who went on stage each night, the patrons and sponsors who had supported the venture, and the more than 40 volunteers who were involved in the running of the event. He also thanked the adjudicators for their good work and for their generosity in making themselves available for the four Friday nights of the competition.
