Beatlemania rocks Enniscorthy
Wednesday July 14 2010
THEY may not have dressed up in Sergeant Pepper uniforms but the performers at Beatlemania last week certainly sounded the part. The attendance at the Athenaeum fundraiser in the Riverside Park had more than their money's worth as the Fab Four directed by Maurice McCarthy became the Scintillating Seven with the addition of a brass section.
Young and old alike enjoyed the Liverpool sound for the night on what happened to be drummer Ringo Starr's seventieth birthday. Memories of the days when the twist was the dance of the moment were recalled as the audience took to the floor in large number and the band played until late.
Afterwards, restoration committee members Helen Ashdown commented: 'It was a great night and it made a few bob.'
Ms. Ashdown hinted that the committee chaired by Tony McClean is poised to move from raising money to spending a few euro and making a start on restoring the landmark building in Castle Street which has been vacant for more than five years.
Committee members are hoping developments will be under way before the end of the year.
